Covid-19 ushers in new era of E-Commerce Entrepreneurship opportunities in UAE

As consumers are continuing to shop online more frequently, even after Covid-19-related restrictions were eased in the UAE allowing economic activities to resume almost entirely as normal, Kitchen Souq is planning to expand its business and increase its market share in the country. The company has witnessed rapid growth in sales and customer base over the past seven months, along with marked shifts in consumer behavior.

Kitchen Souq recorded a remarkable increase of 47 percent on average in sales during the months between March and June, as compared to the times before the World Health Organization officially declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. The company has also seen a 10-fold jump in traffic to its website together with a 31 percent rise in the number of new customers during the same period.

Home and kitchen electronics appliances and lifestyle products, such as kettles, toasters, bakeware, special juicers and meat grinders, saw the greatest demand from individual consumers. Safety, competitive pricing, and a wide selection of products and services from well-known brands were key drivers of growth in new customers and frequency. Business customers, on the other hand, were keen on merchandise that are hard to find in the market, as well as affordable glassware and accessories.

With new pandemic-driven e-commerce trends set for permanent adoption, Kitchen Souq has outlined a new strategy to increases investment to improve the customer experience for both individual and business consumers. The company will focus on further enhancing its product portfolio and adopting new technologies.

Jihad Hassan, Founder and CEO of Kitchen Souq, said: “With online businesses serving to the needs of consumers faced with many challenges including mobility and safety, the Covid-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of e-commerce in today’s world. At Kitchen Souq, our strong offering combined with excellent customer service has enabled us to capitalize on the opportunities coming out of the pandemic. Our attractive value proposition for both B2B and B2C customers has offered us a competitive edge in the market and we continue to experience rapid growth.”

“While we acknowledge that the pandemic has brought tremendous challenges to many industries, it has also opened up a new world of opportunities for e-commerce entrepreneurs in the UAE. Inspired by these prospects, we are keen on investing to further expand our business through the creation of unique experiences for our customers,” added Hassan.

As part of its corporate social responsibility strategy, Kitchen Souq recently partnered with the Al Jalila Foundation, a member of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives. As part of the collaboration, the company will donate a part of its sales to support the Foundation’s initiatives in line with the Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The philanthropic organization dedicated to transforming lives through medical research, education and treatment was founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in 2013.
